The business context
A clause may be brief while its implications require substantial examination. Reviewers may need to consider relevant legal material, understand possible concerns and prepare questions for further professional assessment.
Teams using AI for this work also need visibility into the quality and behaviour of the assistance they receive.
The project
ClauseSense is a reference implementation for clause-level legal analysis with supporting context.
The project combines a focused review task with visibility into the material used to support an explanation. It also includes monitoring of system behaviour and retrieval-related quality indicators.
Its scope is deliberately focused on helping a reviewer examine a clause and the information relevant to it.
An illustrative scenario
A reviewer encounters a provision allowing one party to terminate an agreement. They want to examine the wording, explore relevant context and identify matters requiring closer legal review.
ClauseSense supports the initial investigation and preparation of that review. Final interpretation and advice remain with the responsible legal professional.
What a pilot could evaluate
A pilot could assess explanation quality, relevance of supporting material, usefulness across a defined set of clauses and the reviewer’s ability to inspect the basis of an answer.
Who it is relevant to
Legal teams, contract-management functions and legal-technology businesses evaluating focused assistance for document review.
